Shuai Zhang v Francesca Di Lorenzo Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.
Zhang Starts Strong against Bucsa
Picking her first WTA win since the Viking Classic Birmingham last month, Shuai Zhang defeated Cristina Bucsa of Spain in the opener with 7-5, 6-3. Starting as the number four seed here in Palermo, her path to the semis is all but clear now. The #161 ranked Di Lorenzo and a subsequent match with a 20-something player in the quarters is all that stands in her way.
However, this may prove to be a big ask of the 32-year-old Chinese – most recently, she fell in the qualifiers in Eastbourne and the first round in Wimbledon. That said, she played in the Lausanne Open doubles last week with Eri Hozumi and reached the semifinal there to find some of that momentum back.
Plus, Zhang has the skillset needed to deliver deep runs – just last month in Nottingham, the current World No. 57 was the runner-up in WTA Nottingham. What’s impressive here is this was despite the fact that she arrived for the tournament on the back of a win-loss tally of 1-9.
Di Lorenzo Wins her First WTA Match Since April
Francesca Di Lorenzo defeated Russia’s Valeria Savinykh 7-5, 6-3, to reach the second round in Palermo. It also marks quite an accomplishment for the 23-year-old American as she won her first WTA match since the WTA Charleston in April.
Back then, she was beaten in round two by Nao Hibino and by the looks of it, she may have to settle for the same result again.
Alternating between ITF and WTA events, Di Lorenzo did not have much joy in either with a quarterfinal appearance in ITF $100,000 Bonita Springs marking her best performance. Most recently, she lost in the opening rounds of the Lausanne Open and the Nordea Challenger.
Zhang v Di Lorenzo Prediction and Tip
In comparison to her American adversary, Zhang is considerably ahead in terms of experience and trophies even though a majority of it may have come on the doubles circuit. Given her superior pedigree, she will start here as the favourite to win but don’t be surprised if this turns into a three-setter.
