Surprise ‘spring training’ game brings Cape Coral seniors joy

CAPE CORAL, Fla.– For most of the past year, seniors at the Highpoint retirement community in Cape Coral have been isolated as they kept safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, they received a much-deserved surprise.

Players from the Cape Coral Cal Ripken Youth Baseball league participated in a “spring training” game on the Highpoint campus. The game, with kids ages five and six on the field, also featured free popcorn, Crackerjacks, hot dogs and hamburgers for the crowd.

“To see this, it makes you emotional in a good way,” Angela Hill, Highpoint’s executive director said. “They’re finally able to do things that they haven’t been able to do in so long.”

All of the seniors who watched the game had received the COVID-19 vaccination. The experience was a brief glimpse of what life used to be in the pre-pandemic world.

“It says we’re getting there,” Loretta Instase, one of the Highpoint residents said. “Slowly, but surely, we’re getting there.”
