Southwest Florida search and rescue team returns from week in Surfside

Amid an echoing of cheers Saturday, firefighter Gregg Abenanti and 35 other team members from Southwest Florida’s Urban Search and Rescue Team-Task Force 6 exited their vehicles after a tough, emotional week away.

Abenanti searched for his wife, Jennifer. When he found her, Jennifer gave him a hug and explained how much she missed him while he was spending the week on a search and rescue mission for those unaccounted for in last week’s condominium collapse in Surfside.

The latest:‘Dramatic decision’: Demolition of remaining Florida condo structure expected within 36 hours; collapse death toll rises to 24

After Jennifer, it was Greg’s 7-year old Great Dane Lacey’s turn for a hug.

The return of the USAR-TF6 to Bonita Springs Fire Department Station 24, 27701 Bonita Grande Drive, was uplifting for team members who worked 12-hour shifts to find survivors.
