President to meet with victims’ families

President Biden will make his first trip to Florida Thursday. The president and first lady Jill Biden will visit Surfside, where they are expected to meet with loved ones of those lost or missing in the devastating condominium disaster.

Check back with the Palm Beach Post and USA TODAY for coverage on Biden’s meeting with the families and first responders and for coverage on the condo collapse search and rescue operation.

Here are five things to watch in President Biden’s visit.

1. Consoler-in-chief

Few modern presidents have been as effective in demonstrating empathy as Biden, who has known more than his share of personal tragedy. In 1972, Biden’s wife and one-year-old daughter were killed in a car accident. Biden’s oldest son, Beau, died of brain cancer in 2015. Any public remarks he makes at Surfside will be widely-watched for that reason alone.
