Over 600 competed in The Priority Business Solutions Freedom 5K on Fourth of July

Over 600 runners participated in the annual Priority Business Solutions Freedom 5K on Fourth of July on Sunday at the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral.

Two Cape Coral runners, Patrick Leary and Jess Edwards, came in first place in their respective divisions.

Leary enjoyed his first 5K back since the pandemic hit, and has really put in training.

“I run every day and I keep training all the time,” he said. “But I really started to focus in on it for the past month or more and tweaking my training towards the 5k distance.”

Chase Diiorio, Fort Myers, FL, works to pass Veronica LeBlanc, Fort Myers, FL, just before the finish line. The Freedom 5K was ran across the Cape Coral bridge to Fort Myers and back, early Sunday morning, July 4, 2021. Patrick Leary, of Cape Coral, FL, won the race and the men's division. Jess Edwards, Cape Coral, FL, won the women's division.

“It was warm, but not too hot so it was good running weather,” Leary said. “The scenery during the run was very nice, too.”

Leary plans to participate in the Freedom 5K next year.

“I love competing,” he said. “That is something I like doing, pushing myself during the race, and that is part of why I love running.”

Edwards was happy to run, and to win the ladies division.

“This was such a fun experience,” she said. “It was my first time competing in the Freedom 5K race and I hope to do it again next year.”

Edwards has trained hard for this event for almost two months.

“It was tough during that time,” she said. “I knew I had to persevere through the training, and during the race, I kept pushing myself and I ended up coming in first out of the other girls and I couldn’t be prouder of myself.”
