Join the City of West Palm Beach for Our Summer Reading Program All Summer Long

 

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – Throughout the months of June and July, the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach is happy to bring back its Summer Reading Program for all ages. This year’s theme is Find Your Voice. Patrons will be able to read all summer long for chances to win amazing books, bundles, and more while exploring amazing programs to help you Find Your Voice! Find details below marked: “Summer Reading.”

 

Unless otherwise noted, no registration is required, and library programs are made possible from the generous support of the West Palm Beach Library Foundation.

Yoga for Every Body with Jade Wonzo

Join us for a yoga class for everyone and every body type! Jade Wonzo welcomes all to her yoga classes and recognizes the beauty in all shapes, sizes, colors, identities, and abilities. The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County generally holds two Community ID drives per month at the library. The Community ID of the Palm Beaches Identification Card is available to all residents of Palm Beach County and provides a reliable form of ID useful for law enforcement, health centers, schools, businesses, and more. Bring proof of identity (passport, consular ID card, state or federal government-issued ID), proof of residency (bill, lease, bank statement, medical bill), and $20 for the processing fee. NFTs & Technology: How a Painter Used Innovation for Creative Inspiration

Renee Phillips is a process-based painter grounded in the physical aspects of painting, mixing, pouring and spraying layers of color onto canvas and wood. Mindscapes is currently on exhibit in the Mandel Library’s Urban Living Room and demonstrates the artist’s integration of material making with technology. In this workshop, Phillips will take you on her art-making journey from physical paintings to her Genesis NFTs. The artist will share her collaborative projects with video animation experts and walk you through the process of making your own artwork using tools to inspire, from artificial intelligence to photography and video. Artist Spotlight: Diane Arrieta

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 75% of the world’s bear species are currently threatened with extinction, meaning that six out of eight species are in danger. In this workshop, participants will learn about the eight bear species and their conservation status.

After the introduction, attendees will have the opportunity to choose one of the six threatened bear species and paint a portrait of it on a wooden round keepsake to take home with them. The workshop will be led by artist Diane Arrieta, who will showcase her sample project of the bears, provide templates for those who are not comfortable with freehand drawing, and guide participants through the painting process.

Boat Safety- Suddenly in Command

Florida has some of the most beautiful waterways in the world, but the weather can change in an instant, and challenging situations can arise without notice. Strong tides and rapidly changing weather can conspire to make even the most experienced mariner opt to stay ashore. Are you familiar with on-water emergency communications? Do you know how to handle rough seas get help in a hurry or what to do while you wait for help to arrive?

The “Suddenly in Command” Course addresses issues that may arise if you encounter situations on the water that require a working knowledge of emergency communications, basic navigation, boat handling, and anchoring, as well as an overview of the items that are legally required to be aboard your boat.

Grassy Waters Presents: Journey of Our Water

Follow our drinking water at the start of its path at Lake Okeechobee and the Grassy Waters Preserve, through the lakes and into the Water Treatment Plant (WTP). This training will provide the audience with an understanding of where our source water comes from and how it gets to the WTP, highlighting the unique challenges of balancing the health of the watershed while providing potable water for over 100,000 residents.

The University of Florida IFAS Climate Smart Floridians Program prepares individuals to make a big impact in the world through a course of study that provides a practical, comprehensive, multidisciplinary foundation for everyone. The City of West Palm Beach Office of Sustainability is proud to offer the Climate Smart Floridians program to local residents and businesses.

Through this 8-module program, you will enhance your skill set in areas including climate change, home energy, renewable energy, yards, food, water, green building, transportation, and consumption with a special focus on West Palm Beach issues and impacts. The program is taught by instructors who are experts in their respective fields, and courses are designed for practical real-world application. Participants will have access to free conservation resources provided by the Office of Sustainability.

The free program is designed to help fill nutritional gaps that children face on weekends throughout the year. Through this 8-module program, you will enhance your skill set in areas including climate change, home energy, renewable energy, yards, food, water, green building, transportation, and consumption with a special focus on West Palm Beach issues and impacts. The program is taught by instructors who are experts in their respective fields, and courses are designed for practical real-world application. The program is designed to help fill nutritional gaps that children face on weekends throughout the year.
