Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard received the EarthX Latin America Award today in Dallas, Texas for his environmentalism and many years fighting climate change.

Trammell S. Crow, founder of EarthX, an environmental organization that holds the world’s largest green gathering annually around Earth Day, presented the award to Marcelo Ebrard in front of a large audience.

The award was given to him for his many environmental actions, including having participated in drafting the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection; reforesting Mexico City with more than 11 million trees; launching the Ecobici program, the first public bicycle program on the continent; rescuing the Magdalena River, the last living river in Mexico City; raising Mexico’s Nationally Determined Contribution and reducing greenhouse gases; and making Mexico one of the leading countries on the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy.

The Foreign Secretary expressed his appreciation for the award, saying, “It is recognition of everything that has been done in our country, of all the Mexican men and women who have done their best to save our city, our cities, our country, our jungles and the world, too…Above, all, it is a commitment to continue with everything we have to do to save our planet. What we have ahead of us is immense, but it is feasible,” he said.

The Foreign Secretary participated, together with climate change and energy specialists and personalities such as former Governor Rick Perry and EarthX founder Trammell S. Crow, as a speaker on various roundtables on climate adaptation, conservation and sustainable cities, and presented the Sonora Plan.

Secretary Ebrard received the award during the April 17-21 trip made by the Convoy for the Internationalization of Mexican Municipalities to Texas.  This initiative, promoted by the Mexican government, is designed to attract investment from the U.S. to Mexican cities.

The convoy visited three cities, Austin, Houston and Dallas, where it concluded its activities. In Dallas, Mayor Eric L. Johnson proclaimed April 20 as the Day of Mexican Mayors in the region.

Throughout the week, Foreign Ministry officials and the Mexican consulates in Austin, Houston, and Dallas, accompanied 21 mayors and more than 19 state representatives from 11 Mexican states, as well as a delegation from these states, to visit and meet with various companies, government agencies, non-governmental organizations and migrant communities. The Convoy met with the Greater Houston Partnership, Impact Hub Houston, Texas Medical Center (TMC), NASA Johnson Space Center, NADBank, TC Energy, Halliburton Labs, Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC), Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, UT Austin, and UT Southwestern (Dallas Medical Center), among others.
