Litter problem in Cape Coral puts burrowing owls at risk

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — ‘Give a hoot, don’t toss your loot’ – That’s the message a Cape Coral wants to send to people who are tossing trash near burrowing owls.

Gene St. Louis was fed up after finding empty beer cans in a vacant lot near his home. He said it’s been happening for months and it’s putting the endangered owls at risk.

“It’s just unacceptable. It’s trashing our neighborhood first, and the owls are in danger,” he said. “I’m just pleading to the community. You gotta stop this guy. Whoever is doing this, it’s just got to be stopped.”

After picking up cans for more than five months, he finally made a sign that reads: ‘Stop dumping your beer cans in our neighborhood, please.’

St. Louis said he’s never seen anyone dumping the cans, but he hopes this message reaches them.

“You’re just endangering these owls. I mean, they don’t deserve it.”
