Tallahassee —

Today, as the Florida Senate is in debate over banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy in a clear violation of Roe v. Wade, Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book shared her personal story surviving child sexual abuse.

“Survivors of rape, incest, and human trafficking who become pregnant as a result of sexual assault have already had their bodily autonomy violated. They had NO choice in becoming pregnant and should have every single bit of choice in what happens next,” said Senator Book. “In these circumstances where choice has been taken at every single turn, this choice must be a survivor’s and a survivor’s alone.”

After supportive debate from fellow Democrats, the amendment failed in the GOP-controlled chamber.

This is Senator Book’s third time filing the amendment; each time, it has been defeated by the Republican majority.
