Former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced his candidacy in the upcoming 2022 election, during a rally in São Paulo on Saturday.
“We need to put Brazil back among the best economies in the world,” he said as he announced his run for the presidency.
Da Silva was convicted in 2017 on charges of money laundering and corruption in a controversial trial, but released from prison after Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled a person could only be jailed after all appeals to higher courts have been exhausted.
In April 2021, the Supreme Court upheld a ruling annulling Da Silva’s corruption convictions on procedural grounds, clearing the way for him to run for a new presidential term.
