The Argentine Government congratulates former Prime Minister of Portugal and former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr. Antonio Guterres, on his election by the United Nations General Assembly as the next Secretary General of such organization for the 2017-2021 period.

Argentina hopes to continue working closely with the United Nations, especially in the fields of international Peace and Security, Human Rights and Sustainable Development.

Further, the Argentine Republic wishes to recognize the work carried out by current Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, in leading the United Nations, as recognized by President Mauricio Macri on the occasion of Ban Ki-moon’s recent visit to our country in August.

Finally, the Argentine Government wishes Mr. Antonio Guterres every success in his term as United Nations Secretary General, and reaffirms its commitment to the Organization in the face of the great challenges of today, with a view to ensuring the future prosperity of all peoples in the world.
