The Government and People of the Argentine Republic, moved by the large number of victims and the destruction caused by hurricane Matthew, extend their solidarity and deepest condolences to the victims’ families and the People of Haiti. Argentina also wishes to express its support for the efforts made by the provisional Haitian Government to alleviate the suffering of the people and contribute to the recovery of the affected areas.
Argentina backs Haiti in these tragic circumstances through the humanitarian aid offered by the Argentine White Helmets Commission to the victims of the hurricane. Last Sunday, an airlift from the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD), located in Panama, was sent to Haiti, containing humanitarian supplies donated by Argentina to address the needs of the Haitian people after the damage caused by hurricane Matthew. The cargo consisted of personal hygiene kits, blankets, and 90 boxes of water purification tablets, enough to purify more than 18 million litres of water and satisfy the basic needs of 102,000 people for 60 days.
For its part, the Argentine contingent of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) is also providing assistance to the victims through the Argentine Air Force Mobile Field Hospital, which moved to Les Cayes, capital city of the South District, one of the areas that was most affected by the climate phenomenon.
